French Open players pocket £8k extra prize money for five-minute match | Tennis | Sport

A doubles duo needed seconds to pocket an extra £8,524 at the French Open. Mackenzie McDonald and Marcus Daniell played just one game of their second-round match before they retired, with Daniell citing an injury.

The team hung around through hours of rain delays on Saturday before they finally took to Court 4 to face 19th seeds Mate Pavic and Marcelo Arevalo.

But it was a short-lived affair, with the only game lasting 80 seconds while the match was forfeited after five minutes.

Had they not taken to the court, McDonald and Daniell would only have been eligible to take home the prize money they earned for their first-round win, totalling £14,916. But because they started their clash with Pavic and Arevalo they will now split £23,440 between them - the total prize for a second-round defeat.

It means their brief outing was worth more than £8k. After playing and losing the first game, the physio came to the court and Daniell gestured to his thigh before he and his partner retired from the match. The Kiwi star previously spent a year sidelined with a knee injury before returning in December.

The 1-0 ret. win for the No. 19 seeds was the only doubles match completed at Roland Garros on Saturday. The rain has wreaked havoc on the tournament so far, and it was no different on day seven. The rest of the doubles matches were postponed even though singles players were able to resume their matches on the uncovered outside courts in the evening.

According to i, there was a communication error involving the doubles players, who received communication telling them that their matches had been cancelled for the day. But the message was supposed to say that only the matches that had not started were removed from the schedule.

The doubles tournament has already been heavily delayed by the weather, with first-round matches being postponed for several days. It has caused problems for those players who are also entered in tournaments next week.

McDonald is among the players entered in the Surbiton Challenger, and he may now decide to hot-foot it on the Eurostar after appearing in the singles draw as the No. 5 seed. He will face a qualifier in the first round if he decides to play.
