British allies fear army will be too small to help fight Russia | Politics | News

Britain allies are reportedly worried about the size of the army should it need to intervene in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The government has previously announced plans to reduce the size of the army from 82,000 to 73,000, making it the smallest it has been since the Napoleonic era.

It is rapidly approaching that number now, with figures showing a force size of 73,190, with more soldiers leaving than being recruited, reports The Times.

Senior American generals have previously raised concerns about Britain's status as a top tier army, warning the UK could no longer rely on the United States to plug the gaps of its capabilities.

Senior European figures have now expressed their own fears the army would not be big enough to fight Russia should a wider conflict break out.

France has more than 110,000 troops in its army, while Germany is planning a recruitment drive to 203,000 across its armed forces.

Britain currently has around 150,000 personnel in its armed forces.

Germany has announced plans to send a brigade-sized force of 4,000 troops to Lithuania from 2027 as part of a Nato plan.

Britain meanwhile will place the majority of its troops on standby to go to Estonia instead of being on the front lines.

Speaking to The Times, one general said: "There is a concern about the British Army. We see they are facing difficulties regarding their human resources and also the equipment capabilities. The number of soldiers will be reducing in the next coming months."

They said the "main problem" facing Britain is the ability "to face a high intensity conflict".

Britain has cuts its defence spending from 2.47 per cent of GDP in 2010 to 2.28 per cent last year. Although Rishi Sunak has pledged to increase that to 2.5 percent by 2030.
The Conservatives currently do not have a plan to reverse the reduction in numbers for the army, while Labour has said it would hit tbe 2.5 percent target when economically viable.

Labour said it would have a defence review if elected.

According to The Times, military leaders have previously said effectiveness and availability of the army is more important than pure numbers.

A senior defence source had however told the publication that the army would struggle as it lacked in areas such as artillery and air defence.

They said the notion Britain could send a 25,000-strong armoured division overseas was “smoke and mirrors” as it lacked "enablers" such as supply trucks and electronic warfare to ensure that it could fight.
