Manchester United have reportedly held talks with Jaap Stam about a surprise return to Old Trafford as part of the club's backroom staff. INEOS' attempts to hire Stam could indicate their decision on Erik ten Hag's future and hint at whether Benni McCarthy will stay beyond the summer.

United's new co-owners have driven significant change off the pitch since Sir Jim Ratcliffe purchased a 27.7 per cent stake in February, inheriting control over football operations.

The shake-up could extend beyond the club's hierarchy after Saturday's FA Cup final against Manchester City, with Ten Hag's position as manager considered unstable.

And reports suggest that changes may go even deeper than that, with an eye-catching new arrival potentially joining the backroom staff next season.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, United have been in touch with Stam over bringing him back to the club where he lifted the famous treble in 1999.

The Dutchman is reportedly being eyed for a position that would act as a link between the squad and staff, offering players someone with whom they can discuss issues.

Discussions with Stam are claimed to be at an early stage, and it remains to be seen whether he is interested in accepting the role.

In October 2008, the 51-year-old returned to United as a scout following retirement, covering most of South America.

Stam then embarked on a coaching career that has seen him take charge of PEC Zwolle, Jong Ajax, Reading, Feyenoord and Cincinnati.

He holds a UEFA Pro License and is represented by World Soccer Consult, and accepting such a position at United could be viewed as a step down from his coaching career.

But the opportunity to play a part in INEOS' new era at Old Trafford could be a tempting proposition, and Stam's arrival could be at the request of Ten Hag.

The United boss has wanted individuals he can trust on and off the pitch, and he may be the driving force behind his Dutch compatriot's potential arrival.

If that's the case, it suggests that Ten Hag will receive the third year of his contract next season amid intense sack speculation.

But on the other hand, Stam's arrival could signal the end of McCarthy's time at the club. The South African coach is out of contract this summer, and United could be on the hunt for a replacement.

McCarthy is an attacking coach, but he is well-liked in the dressing room and undoubtedly has his door open to listen to any player concerns.

Stam could be in United's sights to fill the void McCarthy would leave.
