New £117m bridge which had to be 'floated' into position | UK | News

A new £117m bridge has finally been completed after its final section was floated into position.

Renfrew Bridge will open in autumn becoming the first road bridge to open for ships in Scotland and link the town to Yoker, after its final piece was floated down from Glasgow on the River Clyde yesterday.

The bridge is a 603ft two-lane road bridge for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

The south section arrived from the Netherlands in April and will now be connected to its north-side partner ahead of the bridge opening.

Both sections reached Renfrew by barge travelling across the English Channel and Irish Sea.

The project is part of the £117m Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside project, which aims to reconnect the communities across the water.

It has a twin-leaf design, with each leaf opening and closing horizontally, and uses a cable-stay system.

Alongside the bridge, the project will also see new roads, cycling and walking routes linking Inchinnan Road in Renfrew with Yoker railway station, using the new Renfrew North Development Road.

The project is jointly funded by the UK and Scottish governments through the £1.13bn Glasgow City Region, a partnership of eight councils working together.

Renfrewshire Council leader Iain Nicolson told the BBC: "The connectivity and opportunities it will create for businesses, workers and communities to locate here is going to bring visible economic benefits to Renfrewshire and the Glasgow City Region."

Scotland's deputy first minister Kate Forbes said the Scottish government's £500m investment in the Glasgow City Region Deal would "unlock economic opportunities in Renfrewshire".
