Meghan Markle thanks Nigerians for welcoming her to 'my country' | Royal | News

Meghan Markle thanked Nigerians for welcoming her back to "my country" as she discussed her West African roots on day two of her visit with Prince Harry.

The Duchess of Sussex spoke at a panel event in Abuja alongside Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director-general of the World Trade Organization, on Saturday night.

They were joined by 50 leading women from different sectors in Nigerian society, including politics, media and business.

She told those in attendance, including PEOPLE magazine: "I want to start by saying thank you very much for just how gracious you've all been in welcoming my husband and I to this country...my country.

"I am just flattered and honored and inspired.

"It has been a whirlwind 24 hours since we arrived, and I very quickly got the memo that I need to wear more color, so I can fit in with all of you and your incredible fashion!"

Meghan, 42, was asked about learning she is 43 percent Nigerian, to which she described calling her mum, Doria Ragland, to ask her if she was aware of it.

She said it "was exciting for both of us to discover more and understand what that really means".

The Sussexes are on a three-day visit where they will also meet with wounded soldiers as part of their preparation for the Invictus Games, the competition Harry, 39, co-founded a decade ago for injured service personnel.

Earlier in the week, the Duke returned to the UK where he delivered a speech at St. Paul's Cathedral to mark the charity's 10th anniversary.

Meghan stayed in California with children Prince Archie, four, and Princess Lilibet, two, before jetting with Harry on Friday.

They landed in Abuja before going on a tour of Lightway Academy, a primary and secondary school in the capital city on day one.
