People are only just realising the obvious reason behind name Monopoly | Weird | News

People have only just started to understand how Monopoly got its very obvious name thanks to a popular social media post.

A viral post on Reddit saw one person point out that the game got its name from its objective and it was not as much of a well-known fact as most might think with many commenters quick to express their surprise.

The post read: "Monopoly is named after the process of monopoly, which is the game's core objective. Players aim to gain exclusive possession and control of all the properties on the board forcing the other players into bankruptcy."

The fact even came fourth on a Buzzfeed list of 21 things people have learned on the social media platform.

But while this fact seems blatantly obvious, the game does have a number of other things players may not be aware of.

Most players refer to the game's mascot, who features in the middle of the board, as 'Mr Monopoly' but his name is actually Milburn Pennybags and he is not the only character on the board who has a name.

The police officer on the Go To Jail square is called Officer Mallory and the character in jail is called Jake the Jailbird.

It comes after research revealed that 69 percent of players have not read the rulebook and do not play the official rules instead making up their own house rules.
