Motorists can save fuel with ‘amazing’ water bowl trick

Petrol and diesel owners can “save fuel” and boost their efficiency by taking advantage of a “cost efficiency” hack, according to experts.

TikTok influencers have shared the tip which claims to make motorists “better drivers” while also helping to save the pennies.

The tip involves placing a bowl of water on a car’s passenger seat with drivers motivated to be slow and steady to avoid spilling a drop.

This is expected to slow drivers down and teach them the art of hypermiling by making road users more aware of their surroundings

TikTok account @barneyplease said: “Are you consuming too much fuel when driving your car, here is a great way of preventing this.

“Get a bowl, fill it up near the top with water and place it on the passenger seat, not on the driver's seat.

“Now let's say you accelerate too quickly you will notice water spilling over the side of the bowl and you don't want that.

“Let's say you're driving too quick and you hit the brakes, water will spill onto the passenger seat and it's a tremendous hassle to clean that up.

“So if you want to save fuel, become a better driver and a more energy efficient driver, get a bowl of water and place it on the passenger seat please.”

@persona5_fanboy added: “This is actually so smart please, I think you're amazing.” @marie_the_pea posted: “Should I use the seatbelt around the bowl please? Safety first you know.”

@tracksuitjunkie remarked: “Very cost-efficient.” However, @dannyjsmith_98 commented: “I think the usefulness will be negated by it spilling when you round corners.”

Anna from TikTok advice channel @moneyformillenials also raised awareness of the simple hack in 2022. She claimed the hack would “affect the way you drive” and therefore “reduce the amount of fuel needed”.

Anna added: “This won’t solve the problem of price increase but was an interesting idea… what do you think?”

One TikTok viewer commented: “I’d cause an accident turning so slow to prevent it from spilling. But definitely coasting and slower starts helps a lot.”

However, @m1zface reacted: “Honestly, I'd just let my seat get wet.” Experts at ChooseMyCar.com have previously opened up on how motorists can get started with a simple tip.

They said: “Keeping an open bowl of water on your passenger seat is a great deterrent for unnecessary acceleration and braking.

"If you hit the accelerator too hard, you'll see water pour out the sides; likewise, if you're driving too fast and braking hard you'll notice water on the seat. The best bowls to use for this are small cereal bowls, with water about an inch from the top."

However, motorists follow the tip at their own risk with water spilling inside a vehicle potentially a safety concern.
