Drivers decrease fuel efficiency with an overlooked ‘window error’

A motoring industry expert has revealed the speed at which drivers should hit the road with their windows down to optimise aerodynamics and improve fuel efficiency — but there’s a catch.

This car pro’s advice comes as fuel prices have reached a five-month peak, exceeding 150p per average across the UK.

Graham Conway from Select Car Leasing said: “Naturally, many of us assume rolling down the window instead of cranking up the aircon is a more fuel-efficient option. After all, an air conditioning system derives its energy from the alternator, which is powered by the engine.

“Science, however, may suggest otherwise, especially at higher speeds. With the windows tightly shut, cars are more aerodynamic and air flows over and around the car.

“But when windows are open, air enters the main body of the vehicle, creating what is known as a ‘drag.’”

In April, fuel costs rose for the fourth consecutive month, with no end in sight as tensions built up in the Middle East.

RAC fuel price spokesperson Simon Williams said: “This year is proving to be another tough one for drivers.”

“Both petrol and diesel are now the most expensive they’ve been since November last year, which is bad for households, businesses, and the economy, especially as we know there is a close link between fuel prices and inflation,” This is Money reports.
