Billy Vunipola cried to wife after arrest as England ace opens up on being tasered twice | Rugby | Sport

Vunipola took off his shirt in front of a group of police officers in a Majorca nightclub. He was tasered twice before being handcuffed and taken to the nearby Son Espases Hospital, where he was arrested and subsequently charged with 'resisting the law'.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Vunipola recalled breaking down in tears while speaking to his wife from a cell after being released from hospital, where he was sedated and strapped down to his bed.

"I think the reason I got sedated was because I fought so hard when they were cuffing me," said the England back row. "I was definitely confused. I remember thinking that it was all a dream and I was going to wake up. I had to go to the toilet, but I wasn't allowed to get up so I had one of those plastic tanks.

"As soon as I did that, the doctor was happy enough for me to leave. They took me to a holding cell and that is when the lawyer met me. I called my wife and had to explain to her what had happened. I remember saying: 'I'm so sorry', and I started crying.

"I said: 'This is the last thing you want to hear, but I'm OK and they're going to hold me until four (o'clock) when I will try to clear myself'."

Vunipola added that police officers were 'shocked' that he continued to resist them after being tasered twice, saying: "I've got two marks on me. Someone told me those with more muscle get more affected by it than those with a little bit more bedding. I guess I was lucky I had a bit more belly because I didn't feel it as much!

"Even when I was on the ground, they were shocked that I still had the energy to resist them, which is what I got done for. I just remember a snippet of [pain] and the next thing I knew, my head was on the ground and that was it."

Vunipola took full responsibility for his actions, with the Saracens forward admitting that he struggles to know when to stop when he is drinking alcohol. The article states that it was Vunipola's first time drinking alcohol in nearly two years, having been teetotal since August 2022 before indulging in Majorca last weekend.

"It's disappointing that I let what happened happen by drinking too much," he said. "I am very sorry. My issue is just not knowing when to stop and that's probably why I stopped drinking for so long. I've never really been a casual drinker. If I drink, I get to a place where I probably forget what I did."
