Number of over 100s driving trebled in the last decade | UK | News

The number of people aged over 100 with a driving licence trebled over the past decade, according to new figures from the DVLA.

The increasing in centenarians behind the wheel comes as the number of people holding a driving licence in Britain smashed through the 42 million barrier for the first time.

Pensioners are also holding driving licences for longer, the figures show, with a 50 percent spike in the number still holding onto the right to drive after reaching retirement age.

Around 6.2 million people aged over 70 held a driving licence at the end of March, reports The Telegraph. A total of 672 were aged 100 or more.

Just a decade ago that number was just 209, with only 4.1 million people aged over 70 holding a driving licence.

John Wilmot, chief executive of car leasing website LeaseLoco, said: “The number of licensed drivers on UK roads has reached an all-time high, underscoring the enduring popularity and convenience of car travel, especially among older individuals.

“For many seniors, owning a car serves as a vital link to social connection, a benefit particularly pronounced in rural areas where public transportation options may be limited or unreliable.”

Jack Cousens, head of roads policy at the AA, says older drivers are "unfairly" singled out as the cause of accidents.

He told The Telegraph: “Whenever there is a high-profile crash involving older drivers there are often calls for restrictions to be introduced, but it is younger, mostly male, drivers who pose more of a risk."

Drivers aged over 70 have to renew their licence every three years. While older people wishing to remain behind the wheel must also declare medication and meet minimum eyesight requirements.

A 109-year-old man in New Jersey is believed to be the oldest active motorist in America. He uses his Hyundai for daily shopping and socialising.
