‘Naturally’ deter slugs and snails with cheap homemade methods pests ‘hate’

A spokesperson for Garden Buildings Direct said: “Slugs are particularly a problem for gardeners during the spring, as the warm and damp climate creates the perfect environment for them.

“Luckily there are several actions gardeners can carry out without having to use expensive slug pellets which contain lots of chemicals.”

One way to “naturally” deter the pests is to use a blended mix of garlic cloves and water to create a strong-smelling solution they “hate”.

This garlic mixture can be sprayed on plants and around the garden where slugs are often found.

According to the pros, the pungent smell will “repel” the slugs from the garden.

Another way to deter slugs is to use coffee grounds which can be spread into the soil to act as a natural deterrent for slugs and snails.

What’s more, the caffeine will also work as a fertiliser for the soil to promote healthy growth for plants and shrubs.

Slugs can also be “repelled” from the acidity found in fruits such as lemons, oranges and limes.

Place the peels and rings next to any vulnerable plants to deter the pests, but they can also be blended into juice and sprayed over the area.

The experts continued: “Planting herbs in and amongst your other plants, flowers and shrubbery can help to keep slugs away and stop them from feeding on your garden.

“Slugs are repelled by the strong scents from herbs such as rosemary and thyme.”

Another successful method is to scatter eggshells across the garden when the weather is dry.

The shells will create a difficult barrier for the slugs to cross. However, be mindful of where they are scattered as plants such as hydrangeas and geraniums won’t appreciate it.

As well as using eggshells around plants, copper can also stop slugs in their tracks in the form of tape or wire.

The pests will get an electric shock and swiftly move away from the plant or shrub. Simply place it around the base of the plant to act as a natural deterrent.
